BREAKING: Julian Assange Arrested at Ecuadorian Embassy in London
Seven Years of Refuge Come to an End
London, UK - Julian Assange, the founder of anti-secrecy group WikiLeaks, has been arrested at the Embassy of Ecuador in London, ending seven years of refuge in the diplomatic mission.
Ecuador Revokes Citizenship
Hours after Assange's arrest, Ecuador released a statement revoking his citizenship. The country's President, Lenin Moreno, has been facing pressure to hand Assange over to British authorities.
Diplomatic Asylum Withdrawn
Ecuadorian Foreign Minister José Valencia said that the decision to revoke Assange's asylum was made "due to repeated violations of international conventions and protocols." Assange had been granted political asylum by Ecuador in 2012 after facing extradition to Sweden over rape allegations.
British Police Make Arrest
British police made the arrest on Thursday after Ecuador withdrew Assange's diplomatic status. Assange is expected to appear in court on Thursday afternoon.
