Germany's appeal against Spain's penalty denied
Cucurella's handball in the quarter-final goes unpunished
UEFA upholds referee's decision not to award a penalty to Germany
Germany's appeal against the referee's decision not to award them a penalty in their Euro 2020 quarter-final defeat to Spain has been rejected by UEFA.
The incident occurred in the first half of the match when Spain defender Marc Cucurella appeared to handle the ball inside the penalty area. However, referee Anthony Taylor waved play on and VAR did not intervene.
Germany went on to lose the match 2-0, and after the game, they lodged an appeal with UEFA, claiming that Cucurella had handled the ball deliberately and that they should have been awarded a penalty.
However, UEFA has now rejected Germany's appeal, upholding the referee's original decision. In a statement, UEFA said that the referee had made the correct decision as there was "no clear and obvious error" in his judgment.
The decision is a blow to Germany, who felt that they were denied a clear penalty. However, UEFA's decision is final and Germany will now have to move on from the disappointment of their Euro 2020 exit.
